2020 Bullet Journal and January Set Up

Wow! I cannot believe it is 2020 already. I am ready to start the year and really work to make it great and productive. I love that everyone is calling back to the roaring 20’s in this coming year. It influenced my design, as I am sure it did many people. I really like the art deco looks of that time and I wanted to add it into the beginnings of my bullet journal set up for the year. Also, I love starting a new journal. The fresh, crisp pages, the space for all the possibilities, and how clean it is.

For 2020, I decided to stick with my Scribbles That Matter A5 journal that I used last year. I bought mine before they changed to the refillable styles, but there are some upgrades in the one I got. Compared to my 2019 journal, I can tell the pages are thicker and there are less of them. So I am thinking that this journal wont last me the whole year, but I did order another one. Perhaps I will section this one out for the first half of the year and use the other for the second half. I am using the navy blue one in the first half, the same color I had for 2019, and then using the other grey one I bought for the second half. For the first pages I drew on, I did a grid spacing page that is so helpful and a cover page for 2020. As you can see I used a gold and black color theme for the year set up. It goes well with the roaring 20’s art deco theme. I really loved how the at a glance page turned out. I used a little different font on that spread than the rest of the pages but is still art deco. I didn’t include my monthly future log’s pictures, but they are pretty simple with art deco calligraphy like on the cover and a list of the dates vertically. Lastly for the year set up, I did a word of the year page, with my word Believe. Then I did a quote from The Great Gatsby Movie song on the last page. I chose believe for my word of the year because I think it sets a good tone for myself and what I want to accomplish this year. I need to believe in myself and others.

So now we get into the set up for the first month of January. I decided to continue with the gold and black in the year set up and then add the red in to fit my theme for the month. I know the beginning fo the year is also called award season, so my January is based off that. The cover is based off a woman walking the red carpet in her big gold ballgown. I did a sketch type look to the drawing and kept it pretty simple looking. I am not the greatest at drawing people, especially faces, so i kept them blank. I am glad I decided not to color in the dress or the carpet. I think it would have been too much.

Since many of the award shows during this time deal with movies and tv, I added in elements from those things into this theme many times. For the monthly layout, I used film real to designate the spaces for days. It turned out really neat. The popcorn and the popcorn bucket filled in the empty space, plus add a chance for more color. I highlighted the dates in gold circles to make them pop!

These film marker habit trackers are probably some of my favorite things in this set up. The shadow gold helps them stand out on the page more. A banner frames the habits title and is colored in on the side with red. On both these pages, the red was added later and I am not sure I am satisfied the addition. For the goals title, I drew a camera with projections with the title inside them. I used stars for my goals trackers and I will probably fill them in with gold as I (hopefully) complete them.

For the brain dump and playlist pages, I like to keep most of the page blank for room to write throughout the month. I added a movie reel below my brain dump title, and then attempted to draw the grammy for the playlist page. I thought it very fitting to put the grammy for the playlist because they are both music related. There is not as much room as usual and no exact places to write, but I like the look of it and it fits well with the theme.

For the last pages of this set up, and the first week of the new year, I wanted to add the known theater masks somewhere and they ended up here. I do like how they turned out with the touch of gold in the ribbons. Overall I really enjoyed setting up my yearly spreads and the first theme of the year. I am still unsure about the red accents on some of the pages, but maybe they will grow on me in the future.
